Product Images That Sell: A Practical Guide for Online Stores

Online shoppers cannot touch your product, so your images do the selling. Here is the set of images every product listing needs and how to make each one work harder.

In a physical shop, customers pick up a product, turn it over and feel its weight. Online, your images have to do all of that. Strong product images answer questions before shoppers think to ask them, and that builds the confidence to buy.

The main image: clean and clear

The first image appears in search results and category pages, often at a very small size. It should show the product clearly, well lit and filling most of the frame, usually on a plain white or light background. Marketplaces have their own rules. Amazon, for example, requires a pure white background for main images. Always check the current guidelines for each platform you sell on, because listings that break them can be hidden.

The supporting images: tell the full story

After the main image, use the remaining slots to answer the most common questions. A strong set often includes:

  • Different angles so shoppers can see the front, back, sides and details.
  • Lifestyle images showing the product in use, in a real setting, by the kind of person who buys it.
  • Scale images that show size next to a hand or a familiar object. Size is one of the most common reasons for returns.
  • Feature infographics that highlight three or four key benefits with short labels and simple icons.
  • Close-ups of texture, stitching, materials or finish.
  • What is in the box, especially for products with several parts or accessories.

Design infographics for small screens

Most shoppers browse on their phones, so text on images must be large and short. Use a few words per benefit, not full sentences, and keep the layout consistent across all your products. If you have to zoom to read it, it is too small.

Keep a consistent look across your store

When every product uses the same lighting, background, angles and graphic style, your store looks organised and trustworthy. Create a simple style guide for your product images and follow it for every new listing, whether you shoot the photos yourself or work with a photographer.

Be honest

Editing should make a product look its best, not different from reality. Colours must be accurate and details must be truthful. Images that oversell lead to disappointed customers, returns and negative reviews, which cost far more than any sale they bring in.

Prepare the files properly

Export images at a size large enough for zooming while keeping file sizes reasonable so pages load quickly. Name files clearly and add descriptive alt text on your own website, which helps both accessibility and search visibility.

Review and improve

Look at which listings perform best and compare their images with the ones that underperform. Small changes, such as a clearer main image or a better scale shot, can make a real difference. Product images are never really finished. They can always be tested and improved.
